Link NRF–FRF Sabbatical Grant 2018 (Closing date: 8/9/17)
For detailed information pertaining to this Call, please refer to the attached Framework as well as the Application and Funding Guide. Institutions may nominate candidates to apply for funding in one of the following two tracks: •Doctoral Sabbatical Grant: for applicants registered for a doctoral degree; and •Postdoctoral Sabbatical Grant: for applicants intending to pursue postdoctoral research training. A maximum of eight (8) applications will be allowed per institution in each call for applications and at least four (4) of these must be for a doctoral sabbatical grant. Nominated applicants’ must apply on the NRF online submission system at: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za.
Link DST-NRF Conference Fund 2018 (31/08/17)
The DST-NRF Conference Fund is intended to support the hosting of international conferences focused on excellent scientific research that has potential for socio-economic impact. The funding platform makes provision for strategic, large events of an international nature, hosted in South Africa, or on behalf of South Africa abroad. The fund will typically support ‘global conferences’ of more than 500 participants. Smaller events can be applied for under the KIC funding instrument of the NRF, published biannually. The overall objectives of this fund are to: •Promote South Africa as a science destination; •Increase the competitiveness of the South African National System of Innovation (NSI); •Showcase South Africa’s scientific endeavours and infrastructure, and to build capacity within the NSI; •Enhance networking within the science system; •Foster international collaboration in order to improve the quality of research outputs by researchers.
Link Submission of Thuthuka Budget Motivations for funding in 2018 (Closing date: 6/9/17)
The Thuthuka Budget Motivation Request for continued funding in 2018, must be submitted by all grantholders receiving Thuthuka funding in 2017 and who are eligible for continued funding for their existing NRF funded project. This applies to the following Thuthuka grantholders: •those who will be in their 2nd or 3rd year of their 1st cycle in 2018, or •those who will be in their 5th or 6th year of their 2nd cycle in 2018, or •those grantholders in the PhD Track who obtained a Doctoral Degree within the 1st cycle and will be in their 5th or 6th year of funding, or obtained their Doctoral Degree in the 2nd cycle and will be in their 8th or 9th year of funding in the 3rd cycle in 2018. All grantholders who submit a budget motivation for continued funding in 2018, must in addition submit a detailed Annual Progress Report (APR) by the due date in February 2018.
Link Funding Opportunity Announcement - NRF/DFG Partnership on International Research Training Groups (IRTGs) (31/12/18)
The NRF has entered into a new partnership agreement with the DFG of Germany to jointly fund International Research Training Groups (IRTGs) between the two countries. IRTGs are structured Doctoral Programmes aimed at training scientists and academics at different stages of their careers, with a particular emphasis on doctoral researchers. IRTGs promote systematic research cooperation through joint research and qualification programmes as well as through cooperative cross-border supervision of doctoral researchers. A central feature of IRTGs is the coordinated and reciprocal research visits by doctoral researchers at the respective partner institutions.
Link Italy/South Africa Joint Research Programme (ISARP) 2018 (Closing date: 7/9/17)
South Africa and Italy have a long lasting bilateral partnership in science and technology. The first agreement was signed in January 1998 and implemented through this Joint Programme in 2000. The success of this partnership has led to the establishment of the new Programme, now known as ISARP, co-funded by DST/NRF and the Directorate General for Country Promotion (Economy, Culture and Science) – Unit for Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI). ISARP offers two different funding opportunities supporting different cohorts of researchers, i.e. the Joint Research Scheme for well-established researchers and the Joint Mobility Scheme for young and emerging researchers (i.e. researchers who are not older than 45 years at the time of application and who have received their PhDs within the past 7-years). Please note that each Principal Investigator shall submit only one project proposal. Principal Investigators cannot submit the same proposal for both Schemes. All South African applications must be submitted through an online application process to the NRF at https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za. A detailed call document is attached.
Link NRF/STINT Science and Technology Research Collaboration 2018 (Closing date 8/9/17)
The National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13 April 2015. The principle objective of the cooperation between the parties is to foster scientific and technological cooperation by facilitating brain circulation between the two countries. Through this joint call, the parties intend to support joint research projects, human capital development, and student and staff exchanges between South African and Swedish universities and research institutions
Link NRF/BELSPO Joint Call for Proposals 2018 (20/9/17)
A MAXIMUM OF 10 JOINT PROJECTS WILL BE FUNDED FOR THIS CALL In January 2017, South Africa and Belgium signed a Science and Technology Agreement to facilitate and strengthen human capital development and research partnerships between South African and Belgian scientists. The South African National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO), as the implementing Agencies of this Agreement, are now announcing the first joint call for supporting joint networking research activities in Marine and Space Sciences between South African and Belgian young and emerging researchers. From the South African side, this call is open to young emerging researchers (researchers not older than 45 years at the time of application), residing in South Africa, and affiliated with a recognised higher education or research institution such as a university, university of technology or science council. The South African PI (Principal Investigator) must be in possession of a PhD (received within the past 7 years). All South African applications must be submitted through an online application process to the NRF at https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za. A detailed call document is attached.
Link SANCOR 2017/2018 International Travel Student Award (21/8/17)
The South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research (SANCOR) is a non-statutory body that generates and communicates knowledge and advice in order to promote the informed use and management of the marine and coastal environments. SANCOR is managed by the Knowledge Fields Development Directorate of the National Research Foundation. SANCOR’s vision is: healthy marine and coastal environments, rich in opportunities for human advancement, managed on the basis of excellent information, generated through well-coordinated research and development of scientific capacity. SANCOR promotes, facilitates and co-ordinates excellence in marine and coastal research and education for the benefit of South Africa. The SANCOR Student International Travel Award promotes and develops capacity in marine and coastal science. It is presented annually to a Ph.D. student in recognition of their work accomplished. The SANCOR International Travel Student Grant offers young marine scientists the opportunity to attend an international conference and to showcase their research as well as gain experience in presenting a paper to an international audience. International conferences provide the ideal platform for interaction and networking with national and international experts in the same research field. The SANCOR International Travel Student Award is valued at a maximum of R50 000.
